Dance
Last August I met Dance, a retired barrel racer. She could hardly walk. Her owners had to consider letting her go. Her adopted mom is a nurse and her adopted dad an incredibly compassionate mechanic.
Dance is a spirited soul, but captured in a broken body when I first met her. We started weekly acupuncture, massage and LASER therapy. She loved it! On the third appointment, as I walked over to her corral, she walked up to her mom with halter in hand, slipped her head in and headed to the gate. Honestly, it made me cry a bit as I think I got more out of our treatment sessions from her than she did. Dance was my own physical therapy as well. Massaging Dance especially, helped my shoulders, recovering from multiple surgeries. There was a mutual connection between Dance and me.
Dance started walking better almost immediately. And she improved little by little along the way. We reduced her to every couple weeks then monthly. She could walk with only minor limping, she was getting sassy around her neighboring horses and she would even break out in a canter from time to time. But we could not seem to improve her trot.
I purchased portable digital high resolution x-ray in December and my first patient to try it out on was Dance! Changes we found in Dance's feet were very explicative of her pain while trotting. But interestingly, she also showed changes in her proximal inter-phalangeal joint. The right side of both front legs was compressed, likely due to her athletic career. I had the lovely opportunity to work with her ferrier. He had done a great job of taking pressure off her heals with a few different techniques. He had also made some great observations of changed growth, chronic bruising, etc in her feet. In light of her x-ray results, I had the ferrier trim her feet just a bit differently. One month later, her mom sent me the video below.
